Traditional Village

A couple of weeks ago the school district had it's annual outing for the foreigners under it's employ. We were taken to a traditional village lovingly recreated for the modern Korean and foreigner. After a few cold days of blinding sunshine and pure blue skies this was the day the weather decided to break, so it was a somewhat damp, foggy affair.
Korean culture of old it seems was mainly obsessed by the need to have male heirs to carry on the family name.

This is exactly what you think it is. Traditionally hung outside the house in order to encourage the birth of a boy in the family.

I know it's not Sunday, but I was busy, not quite sure doing what though. It's been odd, for the couple of weeks before Japan the camera didn't leave it's bag, then, this week (well last week now, but you get the idea)...school show, staff hike up mountain AND a fireworks display!!! Because I'm generous I'll let you see one of each!

I know I've been slack, and I've not put up a pic for a few weeks, so I thought I'd get back into things with a couple of shots from Japan, and, hopefully, next week, I'll actually put something up I shot THIS week.

These are both from Kyoto. The girl with the white face is a Geisha, or in Kyoto dialect, Geiko, or an apprentice Geiko, a Meiko. The other is a woman in traditionl Japanese costume. She's not as sharp as I'd have liked, but it's night shot and I like the overall effect.

I guess that means I've failed in my attempt to shoot and post every week, but I'll hopefully pick things up this week. This week I'm off to Japan, so lots of new things to shoot. The first is some of the sculls recovered from the mass graves near Phnom Penh left by Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge Estimates of the death toll range up to 3,000,000.

I know I missed the Sunday deadline for last weeks pic....
I took the camera out in Sat and Sun ut didn't really get much, so, to stay within the rules, this is the best pic I took last week. It's a big fluffy cushion/ pillow type thing for those of you wondering.

This however was taken on Tuesday this week, just across the road from Yongsan station and huge electronics store where I went to get my mouse repaired. This is a small red light district, just starting up for the night. The glass doors you see running into the distance will be filed with women touting for business and the street full of drunken Korean businessmen.

Went away with the Korean teachers on Fri night SW of Seoul to the coast.
A good time was head by all. This was taken at the fishmarket as the discarded fishes heads were been thrown to the gulls.

This was taken NW of Seoul where two rivers converge into the Han river which runs through Seoul I've played with the picture a bit in Gimp (free photoshop wannabe)and, after looking at it for too long am no longer able to judge wether or not the image has been improved or not...the less tweaked version is below. These golden lucky pigs (for it is the year of the Golden Pig) are amazing things. You throw at them the floor, they go almost flat, and then slowly pull themselves back into shape. This is a post slpat pig doing just that.

Well, didn't manage to get the camera out this week, so I thought I'd try this, and it's almost worked. as you can see, apart from a slight colour difference, you can see right through my laptop. It was something I saw a while ago, done much better, it looked cool on the pics I saw...here you can just see how dirty the outside of my windows are :)

This was the closing week of the Hi Seoul Festival, which was a little disappointing. I'd checked the web site, I'd phoned up the nice people at the tourist info office, and both said that the hire wire walking over the Han river finished at 6pm, so I turned up at about 3pm, and waited a while, and then watched people taking down the tape keeping you out of area where you should not be going for the event. Odd thought I, so I enquired of said people just what they thought they were doing. Cleaning up said they, event finished just after lunch....grrrrrr. So, the first shot is the tightrope type stuff, and the second, some bloke I saw while walking dejectedly to the train station. And I know it's still in the first week of may, but the camera didn't leave the bag for a while after, so it's counting as the week after.

The first of these pictures was taken at staff volley ball game against another school. They made it through this round but fell at the next. Which was sad, but did mean that Tuesday afternoons returned to me playing badminton, not watching volley ball. The rest are from the school sprorts day which was the same week. If anyone knows how I can get these pictures to go side by side, please give me some techie help.

On Friday I went on a hike with a few of the teachers up Sorak Mt and got some spectacular views of Seoul, if such an adjective can really be applied to the view that is the endless rows upon rows of apartment blocks. I am being a little unfair as there were some unspoiled and beautiful views looking the other way, but, strangely Seoul seemed to be the more compelling, perhaps because of the unendingness of it's apartments.

Back in the South

Well, I'm once more in the Seoul area about to start a teaching job. This time I working at an elementary school near the Mia-sagorey station up on the blue line in the NE of the city, which is good as it's close to Ben and Sarah, so I'll have some friends not to far away. I'm currently at a conference center in the middle of nowhere learning the basics about Korean with about 50 other teachers. It would be great if this was my first time here, but not quite so good for a lot of us who have already been here. It's not too bad, but the combination of the location, the loose schedule, (which I'm not complaining about) and a lack of wifi means there is a lot a free time with not a great deal to do. Still, having fun getting to know my fellow teachers. Right I have to head off now, so I'll update later.

Well, this weekend I went over to see a couple of mates from the good old Uni days and on Sunday me and Alex went up to the dry ski slope near Queensbury. Nice veiws, a bit nippy. Here are the Pics :)

I'm going to sneak two pitures up this week from Saturday. I went to see my friend, Mick, in the aforementioned Morcambe on a very foggy day, which spoilt the lovely sea views. I use the term lovely in it's loosest sense as Morcambe is famed for the sea always been out. Enough waffeling, here are the pics.

Another late picture if the week. This is a MASSIVE ice sculpture at the snow sculpture park in Harbin, China. Its done, I think, by some Canadians and shows the native Americans crossing the bearing strait. This is a panorama pasted together using PS CS2, and if anyone knows how to get rid of the joint lines....
